Building a Cleaner Future for Forestry
At Hawk Planting Works, sustainability is more than a goal, it’s the foundation of everything we do.
We design products that support responsible forestry and environmental stewardship. Every roll of Hawk Flagging Tape is made in Canada using materials chosen for their low impact and renewable sourcing.
Our mission is simple: Give an alternative product with biodegradable, FSC-certified alternatives that work for the industry.
FSC-Certified and Sustainably Sourced
All paper used in our Hawk flagging products is certified under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), ensuring responsible forest management and traceable supply chains.
The Kraft paper is made from sustainably managed wood fibres with 10% recycled content, no post-consumer material, and an acid-free composition to prevent harmful soil leaching. Each production batch is tested to ensure consistency, strength, and biodegradability.
Certification Details:
- Certification Body: Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) & Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) or the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)
- Material Source: Certified Canadian Forest products
- Recycled Content: 10% pre-consumer recycled fibre
- Renewal Schedule: Recertified annually by the paper manufacturer
- Environmental Compliance: Meets or exceeds Canadian and international standards for sustainable paper production
We choose certified materials not only for quality assurance but to support forestry practices that protect ecosystems, biodiversity, and future generations of planters.
Eco-Friendly Materials, Designed for Renewal
Our biodegradable flagging tape is made from high-quality Kraft paper, engineered for strength, flexibility, and rapid decomposition. Unlike other products, which can persist in the environment for decades, Kraft paper naturally breaks down within months through biological processes such as moisture absorption and microbial activity.
Material Composition
- SFI-certified long-fibre Kraft paper
- 10% recycled pre-consumer content
- Acid-free and recyclable
- Free of plasticizers and synthetic binders
- Water-based, non-toxic colouring dyes
This unique composition ensures that every roll of Hawk Flagging Tape contributes to a healthier environment while maintaining reliable performance for forestry operations.
Paper has always been a product of the forest. We believe it should stay part of the natural cycle — sustainable, renewable, and safe to return to the ground.
Our biodegradability isn’t theoretical — it’s proven.
In real-world field trials, Hawk Flagging Tape showed a visible breakdown and fibre softening after just a few months, leaving no trace months after exposure in natural forest conditions.
Testing Insights:
- Drop Flagging Tape (Thin): Decomposes in approximately 6–8 months under typical weather conditions.
- Hanging Flagging Tape (Thick): Takes an estimated 3-4 months longer to fully degrade.
- Test Results: “No visual trace of HPW Flagging” observed after 6 months in controlled trial.
- Degradation Factors: Influenced by temperature, humidity, and UV exposure.
All paper products are designed to break down into organic matter without releasing harmful chemicals or microplastics. The result is a cleaner forest floor, reduced wildlife risk, and the assurance that nothing unnatural is left behind.
Supporting Reforestation, & Saving Animals
Hawk Planting Works was founded on the belief that forestry supplies should work to support sustainable goals, not against it. Every roll of biodegradable flagging tape made from paper represents an opportunity to use an alternative to plastic — Leave your work a lasting memory not your markings.

Circular Resource Use
Marking with other Products has been standard in forestry for decades, but it doesn’t have to be the future. Hawk Planting Works provides a practical, sustainable path forward for crews, contractors, and the planet.
The Hidden Cost of OTHER PRODUCTS
Other products can have a long-lasting impact on ecosystems that is often overlooked. Unlike biodegradable paper, other products may not decompose naturally. Over time, it fragments into smaller pieces that can linger in forests and waterways for years, posing a serious risk to wildlife and soil health.
Wildlife Ingestion
Animals often mistake other products for food or nesting material. If Ingested it can block digestive tracts, cause starvation, or lead to fatal internal injuries.
Pollution
As some products degrade, they breakdown into micro particles that remain in soil and vegetation, entering the food chain and disrupting local ecosystems.
Habitat Interference
Other products may get entangled in young trees and can restrict growth, impact reforestation success, and require costly manual removal.
Aesthetic and Environmental Damage
Other products remnants left behind years after marking undermine the appearance of natural landscapes and the public perception of sustainable forestry.
Hawk Flagging Tape removes these risks entirely. Each roll of biodegradable flagging tape made from paper prevents long term waste from entering the environment, helping to protect wildlife and maintain the natural balance of forest ecosystems.
Committed to Responsible Forestry Practices
By choosing Hawk’s biodegradable products, you’re helping reduce long term waste, support reforestation, and protect Canada’s ecosystems.
