A Canadian Company Rooted in Outdoor and Forestry Experience

Sustainable Innovation, Rooted in Forestry Experience

Hawk Planting Works designs and manufactures innovative tools for Canada’s forest industry — including Hawk Flagging Tape and the Ripper Dispenser. Founded by a second-generation reforestation contractor and his sons, our company brings decades of field experience and a deep respect for the environment to every product we create.

With over 700 million seedlings planted, our legacy in reforestation guides how we approach sustainability: with practicality, purpose, and the drive to make forestry operations cleaner and more efficient for everyone.

Our Story

Hawk Flagging Tape began after a troubling incident in the Cariboo region of British Columbia, where ranchers and forestry operations share the same landscape. When a cow was found with indigestible flagging tape in its stomach, it became clear that a safer and biodegradable option was urgently needed.

Working with the Western Forestry Contractors Association and their working group, we explored alternatives after ranchers worked to stop the use of plastic flagging tape in the Cariboo region. Planting contractors still needed a reliable marking method, so the search for a practical, field ready solution became a priority.

This led to the development of our high visibility paper flagging tape made from Canadian sourced, FSC certified materials. The tape performs reliably in the field and naturally decomposes safely and quickly, helping prevent harm to wildlife and livestock.

The Ripper Dispenser, designed by third generation planter Colby Hawkenson, supports that mission by making it easy for crews to use paper tape efficiently in all terrains and weather conditions. Together, these tools help planters and contractors reduce their reliance on alternative products without compromising productivity.

The People Behind the Products

Hawk Planting Works is a small, hands-on team that understands the realities of fieldwork and the value of sustainable materials.

Second-generation planting contractor with over 40 years in the silviculture industry. As founder and owner, Kurt continues to lead the company’s design and production efforts.
Third-generation tree planter and creator of the Ripper Dispenser. With four planting seasons under his belt, Colby brings practical insight and hands-on innovation.
Third-generation planter with five seasons of experience, including two as a crew leader. He oversees site operations and manages Hawk’s growing social media presence.

Each member brings years of forestry and field experience to the table, combining technical knowledge with practical understanding of what works in real conditions.

We’re proud to be a Canadian company manufacturing products that directly support Canada’s forestry, reforestation, and environmental industries.

Company Journey

The journey of Hawk Planting Works began in 2021 in Prince George, BC — a small operation born out of a big idea: create a sustainable alternative to plastic flagging tape.

After two years of experimenting with paper strength, colourfastness, coatings, and durability, we launched field trials for what would become Hawk Flagging Tape and the Ripper Dispenser. Early prototypes were tested across a variety of terrain types, weather conditions, and planting methods, helping us refine every detail.

Those trials confirmed what we had hoped — that biodegradable materials can meet the needs of modern forestry while reducing long-term environmental impact. Today, we continue to evolve our products with hands-on testing and real-world feedback from planters and contractors across Canada.

Community & Industry Involvement

Hawk Planting Works is continually exploring opportunities to engage with forestry companies, reforestation contractors, and environmental organizations that share our commitment to sustainability.

While our focus remains on developing responsible products for the field, we’re equally interested in building relationships that support innovation, education, and environmentally conscious practices across the industry.

We welcome future collaborations and partnerships that contribute to reducing plastic use, improving field efficiency, and advancing sustainable forestry across Canada.
